Within its current borders the Wymiarki Forest District was created on 1 January 1993.

Within its current borders the Wymiarki Forest District was created on 1 January 1993, when Sub-district Iłowa Żagańska was attached to the newly created Żagań Forest District by the ordinance of Ministry of Environment, Nature and Forest Resources Protection (MOŚZNiL - Ministerstwo Ochrony Środowiska, Zasobów Naturalnych i Leśnictwa). The Wymiarki Forest District encompasses three Sub-districts: Gozdnica, Przewóz, Wymiarki. The total area of the forest district is 23,946 ha, including the forest area of 22,985 ha. After World War II, the Wymiarki Forest District and Iłowa Żagańska Forest District were established on the area of today's Wymiarki Forest District. In 1948 Przewóz Forest District came into existence and in 1954 Gozdnica Forest District followed as an independent district. On 1 January 1971 the Wymiarki Forest District was establish from the existing Gozdnica, Iłowa Żagańska and Wymiarki Forest Districts. In 1972 the Przewóz Forest District was also joined to the Wymiarki Forest District.

Definite forest management for Wymiarki, Iłowa Żagańska and Przewóz Forest Districts was based on the state for the date of 1 October 1965. For Gozdnica Forest District it was based on the state on the day of 1 October 1964. In the past, forest management was based on the so called provisional age class tables. In the 1950', provisional forest management plans were used. Currently, the Wymiarki Forest District is during its IV review of forest management plans.

As a unique nature and landscape site, the Wymiarki Forest District is an attractive place for tourism and recreation for many Poles.

Every year our forests are visited by enthusiasts of mushroom and berry picking and of many other riches found there.

The vicinity of Lusatian Neisse River (Nysa Łużycka) on the border allows for fishing, as well as for kayaking and rafting trips. The attractions are attended not only by Poles but also by other EU citizens. Agritouristic farms offer rides on horseback, kayaking and pedal boat rental.

Six marked cycling trails run through the Forest District. They create the so called "Korona Wymiarek" (the Crown of Wymiarki).

In the north-eastern part of the Forest District one can admire the beauty of "Łuk Mużakowa" (The Muskau Arc). The 15th meridian runs through the Forest District. This is marked by a granite plaque placed in the Spalone Forest Rangers Area, in sub-district Wymiarki.

What is more, Forest District Wymiarki makes its forest routes available for organisation of mass events such as off-road motorbike and car rally.

From the objects of material culture, one should see parish and filial churches in Bogumiłów, Lipna, Piotrów and Witoszyn Dolny Of particular note are: medieval filial church in Lutynka, built of stone probably in the XIII century, as well as the ruins of monastery in Straszów and „Wieża Głodowa" (Hunger Tower) in Przewóz.

The areas of local hunting zones, rich in variety of game, attract domestic and foreign hunting enthusiasts. Rare tree species found in our forests include: Eastern White Pine, Pitch Pine, Scots Pine, Douglas-fir and Sweet Chestnut.
